When temperatures drop in the Willamette Valley, keeping your home warm and comfortable becomes a top priority. At Santiam Heating & Cooling, we’ve helped thousands of Oregon families stay cozy through even the coldest winters. Here are five of our favorite tips.

1. Schedule a Furnace Tune-Up

Your furnace works hardest during winter, so it makes sense to give it a checkup before the cold really sets in. A professional tune-up catches small problems before they become expensive repairs — and keeps your system running at peak efficiency.

2. Upgrade Your Thermostat

If you’re still using a manual thermostat, you’re probably spending more than you need to. A programmable or smart thermostat lets you set schedules so your furnace isn’t working overtime when nobody’s home. Most of our customers see their investment pay for itself within the first winter.

3. Seal Drafts Around Windows and Doors

Even the best heating system can’t keep up with a drafty house. Check weatherstripping around doors and windows, and add caulk where you find gaps. It’s one of the cheapest improvements you can make, and the difference is immediately noticeable.

4. Change Your Air Filter

A dirty filter makes your furnace work harder and circulates dust throughout your home. We recommend checking your filter monthly during heavy-use months and replacing it every 60–90 days. It’s a two-minute job that makes a real difference.

5. Use Ceiling Fans in Reverse

Most ceiling fans have a reverse switch that makes them spin clockwise. This pushes warm air that collects near the ceiling back down into the room. It’s a free way to make your heating more effective.
