What to Know About Central AC

Oregon summers used to be mild enough that a lot of homes got by without air conditioning. That changed. The 2021 heat dome made it clear — AC isn’t a luxury anymore for most Valley homes.

Central AC works with your existing furnace and duct system. The same ducts that carry heat in winter carry cool air in summer. If your home already has ductwork, adding or replacing a central AC unit is usually straightforward.

If it doesn’t, a ductless mini-split is probably the better answer. We’ll tell you which makes sense for your situation.

Why Homeowners Choose Santiam for AC

We know Valley homes

Most homes in this region weren’t built with extreme heat in mind. We size and install systems that match how the house actually performs. Not just square footage on a floor plan.

Honest repair-or-replace guidance

If a repair makes sense, we’ll say so. If the compressor is gone and the unit is 14 years old, we’ll tell you that too. You get a straight answer before any work starts.

In-house ductwork

Sometimes an AC install means duct modifications. We handle both. No coordinating with a second contractor.

Established 1994

We’ve been installing and servicing AC systems in this valley since 1994. We know what holds up here.

Is It Time for a New AC?

Your system is 12 to 15 years old

Even if it’s still running, efficiency has dropped. A new system costs less to operate, and most qualify for utility rebates.

Repair costs are adding up

Refrigerant leaks, capacitor failures, compressor issues — some repairs cost more than they’re worth. We’ll tell you where the line is.

Your home never gets comfortable

An undersized system runs all day and still can’t keep up. That’s a sizing problem, not a thermostat problem.

Not sure if yours has another summer in it?

We’ve seen every brand, every age, every way these things fail. We’ll tell you if it’s worth fixing or if you’re better off replacing. No pressure either way.

Common Questions About Air Conditioners

How much does AC repair typically cost?
Most repairs run $100 to $600. That’s a range, not a quote — the actual number depends on what’s wrong. We’ll diagnose it and give you a clear answer before we start.
How long does AC installation take?
Most replacements take one to two days. New installs where duct work needs modification can take longer. We’ll give you a realistic timeline when we quote the job.
What brands do you install and service?
For service and maintenance, we work on all major brands. Ask us what we’d recommend for a new install for your home.
Should I repair or replace?
Age and repair cost together tell the story. If your system is under 10 years old and the repair is reasonable, fix it. If it’s pushing 15 years and you’re looking at a major repair, replacement usually makes more sense. We’ll walk you through the math.
