Air to air heat pump for cooling or heating the home. Outdoor unit powered by renewable energy.

The Northwest's Default for a Reason

Heat pumps have been the default choice across the Pacific Northwest for years, and for good reason. They’re efficient, they handle our mild winters well, and a single unit does the work of two — heating in winter, cooling in summer.

A heat pump doesn’t generate heat. It moves it. In winter, it pulls warmth from outdoor air and transfers it inside. In summer, it runs in reverse. That’s what makes them efficient — moving heat takes far less energy than creating it. Modern units work reliably down to around 0°F, which covers nearly everything the Willamette Valley throws at a system.

Santiam has been installing and servicing heat pumps across the mid-Willamette Valley since 1994. If you’re wondering whether one makes sense for your house, we’ll give you a straight answer.

Why Homeowners Choose Santiam for Heat Pumps

Honest assessment

Heat pumps are a strong choice for most homes here — but not every home. We’ll look at your existing equipment, ductwork, and electrical service and tell you straight whether it makes sense.

Proper sizing

A heat pump sized wrong runs inefficiently and wears out faster. We size for the house, not an average floor plan.

In-house duct work

If your ducts need modification or repair before the install, we handle that too. No coordinating with a second contractor.

Established 1994

We’ve been installing heat pumps in this valley long enough to know what performs here and what doesn’t.

Is a Heat Pump Right for Your Home?

You're replacing both a furnace and AC at the same time

If both systems are aging, a heat pump replaces them both in one install. That’s usually where the economics make the most sense.

Your home has existing ductwork in reasonable condition

Ducted heat pumps work with what’s already there. If the ducts are in good shape, it’s a straightforward swap.

You want to reduce your reliance on natural gas

Heat pumps run on electricity. If that’s a goal, this is the path. They’re less ideal if your ductwork is severely deteriorated, if your electrical panel needs significant upgrading, or if you heat primarily with a wood stove and just want a backup. We’ll tell you any of that before you commit.

Common Questions About Heat Pumps

Do heat pumps work in Oregon winters?
Yes. Modern heat pumps are rated to operate efficiently down to 0°F. Our winters rarely get there. Some systems include backup electric heat strips for extreme cold — we’ll tell you whether your setup warrants it.
How efficient is a heat pump compared to a gas furnace?
In mild temperatures, heat pumps can deliver 2–3 units of heat for every unit of electricity used. Gas furnaces are typically 80–98% efficient at converting fuel to heat. In the Willamette Valley, heat pumps generally come out ahead. The comparison depends on local utility rates and how cold your winters get.
How long does a heat pump last?
Typically 15–20 years with regular maintenance. Units that skip annual service tend to fail earlier.
Can I add a heat pump without replacing my existing furnace?
Sometimes. Dual-fuel systems pair a heat pump with an existing gas furnace — the heat pump handles mild weather, the furnace handles the coldest days. It’s not always the most cost-effective path, but it’s worth discussing.
What brands do you install?
Hisense, Bosch and Coleman. We service most major brands regardless of who installed them.
